Home Advisor and Angie’s List

Home Advisor is a network site that you can use to find home improvement professionals that are geographically located near you. There’s no charge for you to access the members. They vet the pros by checking the license, online ratings, doing a criminal background check, a civil judgment check and ID verification. What they can’t do is ensure that the contractor has the other qualities that I’ve outlined above, such as the specific experience you’re looking for. So if you do give Home Advisor a try, just be sure you still put the contractor through your own vetting process.

Angie’s List works the same way as Home Advisor. You conduct a search, find vetted contractors and you can use them to do your rehab.

One big problem with both Home Advisor and Angie’s list is that it’s harder to find a general contractor. You don’t want to hire all individual subcontractors. That’s not the kind of hands-on approach you should be taking. You need a general contractor to take the reins and oversee the work. Now, if you have some problem that requires special skills, like a pool pump or a leaky roof, and you don’t need a general contractor, one of these two sites might be helpful at some point.
